A World Away - City of Cyclists Talk
I think many people got a kick out of the amazing video I posted last year showing hundreds of parents and kids riding their bikes to school in the Netherlands:
Copenhagen (Denmark) is actually a bigger cycling city--where 40% of people commute by bike every day. When I worked in Boston, I really enjoyed to ride when I could--but clearly, we are in a very different place.
If you'd like to learn more about those crazy Europeans, Livable Streets is hosting a talk next Wednesday, August 4 from 7-9pm at their Cambridge office, 100 Sidney St:
Info from Livable Streets:
1,000 people from around the world gathered in Copenhagen in June for the Velo-City Global conference to learn, discuss and share best practices about urban street design and bicycling. The conference was held in the 'City of Cyclists' where almost 40% of people commute by bicycle every day! Come to the LivableStreets' StreetTalk to hear stories and see photos from the conference in Copenhagen, and travels around Denmark, Netherlands, and Sweden by our own:
- City of Boston Transportation Planner Charlotte Fleetwood,
- City of Cambridge Bicycle and Pedestrian Planner Cara Seiderman,
- Northeastern University Engineering Professor Peter Furth,
- MAPC Transportation Planner David Loutzenheiser, and
- LivableStreets Alliance Director Jackie Douglas
Open to the public. Suggested $5-$10 donation to support the StreetTalk event series. Beer provided compliments of Harpoon Brewery!

I commute by bike from Islington to MIT, most of the year. It can be done! And I'm hardly one of those zero-body-fat crazy bikers. here's my typical route:

nice route
I'm very familiar with that route--although I just hop on Washington Street all the way to Forest Hills from Islington Center. It probably sounds crazy, but one of the things I miss most about working in Boston is the excuse to ride my bike. A nice alternative on the way home is to take Eneking Parkway to East Dedham Square, then Walnut over to East Street--after I did an endover coming down from Bellevue Hill, I refuse to ride down that stretch between West Roxbury Pkwy and the Dedham Mall.
I'm impressed
That's about a 13 mile ride in each direction with some pretty good elevation changes. I bet you work up a pretty good sweat even when it isn't in the 90s and humid :>)
