Thanks to the Voters, Supporters and Candidates
I would like to thank all the voters who came out Tuesday and participated in our town election. With only one race, all others uncontested, 29% voter turnout was a relatively good showing as town elections go.
Thanks to all who supported me with not only their votes but with their personal efforts, a sign or donation, it was much appreciated.
Special thanks to the other three candidates. Until you run for office you can't understand the tremendous amount of effort, time, money and organizing it takes to mobilize supporters and run a campaign regardless of the size of the race. They should all be commended for stepping up, putting themselves on the line and working tirelessly, all so the voters of Westwood would have a choice as to who they felt would best help lead the town as we go forward.
And not to take anything away from Jason or Phil but the campaign I personally was most impressed with was that of Greg Agnew's. Working from a clear disadvantage of his youth and lack of life's experiences that can only be acquired through living a bit longer, Greg organized and ran an incredible campaign. He should be commended for trying to effect the change he felt could best help the town and not just sitting on the sidelines. Coodos!
As we go forward as a town, and continue to stay involved, it is in all our best interests to be as supportive of Phil Shapiro in his new role and to all our elected officials and them to us, the constituents they serve, in their varying roles, to help keep Westwood the town we all want it to be.
Sincerely, Doug Obey

What's next for you? State Rep again...
Doug,
Will you be hanging up your run for another public office? How many more public posts can you lose? How many more times can you ask your family to hold signs for you?
Honestly, this is your 4th time running for Selectman and the 9th time running for some political office. When is it enough? Haven't the voters made it clear they do not care to have you in office?
Either you have a REALLY REALLY big ego or you just love being the ongoing town jester. You've become the laughing stock of the town aka the consistent loser.
I honestly think the outcome would have been different if you didn't run. Now we have another friend of Tony and a conformist with the current Selectmen.
Please let it go and give it up!
ridicule
your comments were really uncalled for. Why would you chastise someone for standing up for what they believe in, by running for office? Sounds like you haven't gotten past the schoolyard bully stage.
Doug deserves better
Phil Shapiro won the Selectman's race handily. If you want to start talking about what might have been, you start from the position that Phil has 42% of the vote, in a 4-way race. His margin in precincts 1 and 2 was overwhelming and only Doug Obey came close to challenging him there. The case can more easily be made that the 4-way race hurt Obey more than anyone else.
I don't personally agree with Doug's positions on many issues that he ran on in the State Rep's race. But he has consistently put himself out there representing his views and winning the support of a significant portion of town. He opposed the Community Preservation Act and ultimately it was essentially withdrawn. He stood up at town meeting and spoke against Article 18. We know where he stands and while we may disagree with him and vote against him, I respect that he is putting himself out there, knowing he will get this kind of mean-spirited criticism again and again.
