Lowell Woods Trail Running

by Dave Atkins

I was looking forward to the Lowell Woods event a few weeks ago, but apparantly it was postponed and cancelled. But on Monday morning I decided to put on my new GPS watch and go for a run on the trails behind the Hanlon School. I ran into a few dead ends, but managed to run about 4 miles in the forest, over generally moderate terain with a few nice hills and descents. It's not Wilson Mountain, but it is a hidden gem here in Westwood for those seeking a walk or run in the woods. Here is a map of my run. I don't think the GPS was entirely accurate--I do not recall any 500 foot hills or bursts of 20+mph speed, but it was a challenging workout to run an under 10 minute pace.

Lowell Woods Day

I apologize for not giving a reason as to why Lowell Woods Day was cancelled and postponed for a second time (date still TBA for the event). The first time the event was called off, we were one week away from the elections and had little to no staffing for the event, since most people were holding signs for each candidate. The second time, we decided more planning was needed in order to make the event a better experience for the residents of Westwood.

I apologize to all of the families who were looking forward to the event. Lowell Woods Day has been a dream of mine for about two years now, and will come to fruition sometime in the future. We're still looking for staffers and volunteers to come out and help us plan the event, becasue I feel we need more awareness of the Woods in Westwood.

Please contact me if you are interested in helping. We are looking for sponsors, (Roche Bros. has already signed on, along with BumbleBee Outfitters) and other commercial entities to help with the event. Call 781-326-8944 if you're interested, or email: greg@gregagnew.com.

Thank you for your understanding and I hope to see all of you very soon in Lowell Woods.

PS-In the mean time, Wendy Muellers and www.keepourtownclean.com would really appreciate your effrorts in picking up any litter that you can find in Lowell Woods, or around town. Each weekend, McDonald's bags, beer cans, and other litter are strewn around Westwood, ruining our landscapes.

Thank you,

Gregory J. Agnew
