Instruments of Change

by Dave Atkins

The Planning Board will hold a public hearing on March 18 to discuss articles for the May town meeting. The principal articles involve the creation of Flexible Multiple Use Overlay Districts (FMUODs) for seven specific areas in town. Broadly speaking, FMUODs allow specific types of development in areas that are technically residential, but have become mixed used through a series of exceptions over time. Did you know that Route 1 is zoned residential? The FMUODs list specific types of development that are allowed and thereby expand the scope of what is permissible making development more predictable and less dependent on obtaining exceptions. The proposed FMUODs include: University Avenue, Southwest Park, Glacier/Everett, Perwal/Walper, Allied Drive, Islington Center/Washington Street, and High Street between the Library and the historic Fisher School.
