Wrestling for Westwood?

by Dave Atkins

Dave Feyler is interested in talking to any parents that would like to help start a wrestling program in Westwood. Westwood's own Kenny Florian is the number 1 contender in the UFC in the 155 pld division. The most expensive part of starting a wrestling program is the mats, which run around $8,500. Wrestling is a very disciplined sport and builds great amount of self confidence. If there are any parents that would like to help out getting a wrestling program started in Westwood email Dave Feyler at Eyedtech@aol.com.

There is also a program called stance in motion that helps new wrestling programs get started with funding. This is only one way of raising funds for the mats. Once the mats are purchased, wrestling is one of the least expensive sports for students to participate. Neighboring towns including Dedham, Norwood, Needham have longstanding, successful programs.

Little League Takes on Newton West for Trip to State Tournament

by Dave Atkins

Westwood takes on Newton West tonight (Monday, July 26, 2010) at 7:00pm at Lyon's Field for a chance to compete in the state "final four" on the road to the Williamsport Little League World Series. This is only the second time Westwood has made it to the section championship in the league's history.

Newton West is hosting the sectional tournament, so obviously they'll have a large crowd of supporters on hand. We'd like to have that same type of crowd supporting Westwood in this historic bid to move on to the Massachusetts state finals.

Come one, come all!  Make some noise and wear your Westwood colors with pride! Wear your spring jerseys, wear anything Westwood, heck just wear something green!

Lyons Field is just off 128 (exit 24).  Take a right towards Newton onto Commonwealth Avenue.  It's just a little bit beyond the Marriott on the left side of the street.

Kindergarten Boys and Girls: K-Ball Registration Extended

by Dave Atkins

The registration period for K-Ball has been EXTENDED thru March 28th. Go to http://www.westwoodlittleleague.com and click on "Register Online" on the left side of the screen to register today!

Boys and girls who are currently enrolled in kindergarten are eligible to play K-Ball--no exceptions will be made for younger or older players. Teams are generally 12-14 players per team.

The entire focus is development.  Kids are taught the basics of proper fielding & throwing mechanics, and learn to hit from a tee. Games are typically 3-innings where each team bats once through the line up each inning.

Games begin in late-April and run through early to mid June.  All games take place on the School Street fields and are held Monday - Friday at 5:30pm with some games on the weekend.  Every effort is made to avoid conflicts with spring sports such as soccer.

ALSO:  If there are any parents who would like to volunteer to coach, please indicate that with your information during the registration process.

Sign up for little league

by Dave Atkins

Pine and Gay St Sandwich Board notice of LL Baseball The principle means of communicating important goings on in Westwood seems to be these sandwich boards that are placed at strategic locations around town. When I am walking around my neighborhood, or if I happened to live across the street from one of the locations, perhaps it would be effective. But usually, I have to stop the car to try and read what is written on the sign in such small print that no one can possibly notice it as they ride by at even moderate speeds.

I stopped to take a closer look at this sign and discovered there is a website for Westwood Little League baseball where you can register your kids online DEADLINE IS JANUARY 18.

The website is actually a templatized product of League Athletics.com, LLC, a Norwalk, CT company that provides organizations all over the country with the tools to quickly set up pretty professional looking websites for less than $500/year. I would say it's worth it because it must make life a lot easier for busy parents and it puts all the relevent information in one place. This is the kind of thing I'd like to promote from this blog--I know how much work is involved in creating a website, but that's just the beginning--you have to get people to find it and use it for it to be worthwhile.
