I'm Moving to Roslindale

by Dave Atkins

Almost three years ago when I started Westwood Blog, I was new in town and hoped to better connect with the community by writing about it and encouraging discussion. I learned Westwood is a great town and I got to know many people--not just online but in person. The blog gave me a way to participate outside of the traditional meetings and events. My interest led to greater involvement and then I was doing the meetings too--starting the Pedestrian and Bicycle committee and becoming a founding board member of WestCAT.

So it was not an easy or light decision when my wife and I decided to buy a house in Roslindale. The first thing many people ask me now is "what will become of Westwood Blog?"

I'd like to keep it going, but I need help. We have plenty of news sites that cover Westwood now, but I think what is valuable about a site like Westwood Blog is that it can provide a way for residents to share what they are doing--not just report on news stories. I would love to see articles from people in town who are active in making this a great community, and I will be happy to help anyone who is interested become a contributor. I will post meetings and events when people send them to me. I'd like to stay in touch with the community and build connections and bridges between the common interests of residents--many of whom grew up in Roslindale, West Roxbury, or Dedham before moving to Westwood. I will probably create something in Rozzie--stay tuned. We're less than 6 miles away.

Our Westwood

by Dave Atkins

Nearly three years ago, I created WestwoodBlog to develop a greater sense of connection with this community. I saw what Brian Keaney had started in Dedham with MyDedham, but I didn't call this site "My Westwood" because, as a recent resident, I thought that would be presumptuous, and I wanted to learn more about the town. I hoped I could stir up conversations and contributions from people in town--to hear what they had to say and share that--not become a reporter for the town. But I did write a lot. I did some reporting, but mostly I related what I knew about and what other people started to tell me. I limited my opinion, but I was not unbiased.

Now, I think the term "blog" has always had a negative connotation. When most people think of blogs, they first think of some individual's website where they announce the details of their life and have half-informed opinions on things. Or maybe they have a political agenda to promote. Perhaps the name is not that big a deal, but I'm going to strike the word blog from the title of this site now and renew my call to residents for the type of participation I think will complement what news sites like Patch, Wicked Local, and now the Boston.com's Your Town Westwood provide.

This is Our Westwood. It is a site you can use to tell your stories, announce your events, and relate context to the news. It's not a place to vent your random opinions about things not Westwood, but you can certainly say what news of local impact means to you. I will use the Community Guidelines I announced earlier this year as a basis for promoting respect and civility. What I would really like is for people to contact me for assistance in becoming regular contributors. Not as freelance reporters or columnists but as first-hand participants. Share what you are doing to make the town a better place--your work  on a board or commission, the community project you started, or whatever you would like to share with the community and get feedback. This site is here to help you do that.

Spam

by Dave Atkins

I have installed some new spam-blocking software on WestwoodBlog. Please let me know by emailing me at datkinsg@gmail.com if you have tried to comment or register on the site and experienced problems. Most of the spam activity gets blocked automatically, but what you occasionally see slipping through is about 1% of what's going on.

Advertise on WestwoodBlog

by Dave Atkins

Since its launch in November 2007, WestwoodBlog has been visited by almost 20,000 unique visitors, primarily from Westwood, Dedham and Norwood. It's not as popular as Boston.com, but there is no other online property that can deliver this targeted an audience: people who are interested in what's going on in Westwood. Based on analysis from Quantcast, our readers are wealthy and educated. For every one person who posts, there are several hundred who return to the site weekly, if not daily, to see what is new.

On Facebook, the site has over 200 fans. We are not looking to compete with the popularity of celebrities, but the consistent and ongoing engagement with a real community means this site is deeply and authentically grounded in "hyperlocal" community. It is not a substitute for news, but a connector of people and information that will continue to grow. In the last 30 days, we have had close to 2000 unique visitors.

I have experimented with positioning ads on the site. The large 300x250 box you see at the right earns me pennies and I don't control what Google decides to display there. Starting March 31, I will be offering ads on the site to local businesses who want to take advantage of this opportunity to reach the community. In this initial phase, I will be booking ad units as 300x250 medium rectangles or 150x150 squares. I do not have a formal rate card yet, but I will structure a combination of sizes that will allow a business to remain visible to residents for the entire month starting at about $100 per ad per month.

If you are interested in being part of this "charter program" send me an email at datkinsg@gmail.com.

Using Facebook to Complement This Site

by Dave Atkins

About a month ago, I created a Facebook fan page at:

http://www.facebook.com/westwoodblog/

I'm using it to provide shorter updates, post quick photos and links, and ask questions. I posted links to the Matt Brown fundraising efforts in Norwood and the news story about Westwood High student Paul Hanley's fatal auto accident this past weekend. I didn't know enough about those things to feel I could write a decent post here, but I wanted to share with people who are specifically interested in Westwood.

I also set up an "RSS/Blog" tab to display automated feeds. "News" shows links to any published news stories on other web sites in the Boston area that mention Westwood. "Jobs" is an automated search of indeed.com for any job within 5 miles of Westwood.

Site Policies Announced

I finally got around to writing up a privacy policy, terms of service and community guidelines. Please take a look at these to better understand how this site is intended to function in the community...

Start Your Campaign on WestwoodBlog

by Dave Atkins

If you plan to run for a board or commission in the 2010 Town Election on Tuesday, April 27, please consider posting an article here on Westwood Blog. It is relatively early in the cycle now--potential candidates have until March 9 to file nomination papers--but it already appears we have four candidates running for two positions on the School Committee.

During the period leading up to Town Meeting and Town Election two years ago, about 1200 people visited Westwood Blog, spending an average of 4 1/2 minutes each on the site. I interviewed each of the four candidates for Selectman and posted that audio online. I will wait until the ballot is finalized before I plan anything specific this year, but I wanted to get things started a bit earlier...

Experimental Advertising on WestwoodBlog

by Dave Atkins

You will notice some advertisements appearing on the site. I am experimenting with the layout and using Google Adwords to provide advertising images for now. I do not control the content of those ads. If you click on the ad, it generates some money for me and costs the advertiser something...
